the by & by for the home depot

Confession – I’m beyond excited to share this post today!

Recently The Home Depot approached The By & By to participate in their Style Challenge series. Obviously, we were hugely flattered because, hello, it’s The Home Depot. Kind of awesome, right?! But even beyond that thrill, this post also marks a few very important firsts for our blog. This is our first collaboration with a sponsor, our first time writing as a guest blogger for another site, and while I frequently art direct and style shoots for work, this also marks my first real attempt at styling a complete space. So like I said – beyond excited!

I couldn’t resist sharing a few outtakes from the shoot, but head over to The Home Depot’s blog, The Apron, to see more of the fun and to find out how you too can add a little extra style to your outdoor space. Continue Reading →

what’s old is new again

Last Friday my agency moved into a tricked out new office space {complete with fabulous new furniture} and I became the proud owner of my old desk! As luck would have it, the new office is within walking distance of my duplex and my desk {a metal restaurant table} is set on casters – so with the help of a coworker I was able to wheel it the three blocks home. Which looked only slightly ghetto, I’m sure. Needless to say, I pretty much spent the rest of the weekend tearing apart my dying Ikea desk and setting up shop on my shiny new table. Here are a few pics of my awesome new workspace! *So excited, weeeee!* Continue Reading →

pet portraits by happy menocal

Artwork by Happy Menocal

I came across Happy Menocal on Once Wed, where her gorgeous custom monograms were featured recently. Then I promptly visited her website where she has a vibrant collection of watercolor illustration featured everywhere from Vanity Fair to Martha Stewart Weddings to Daily Candy. And while you should take the time to peruse her entire collection, I’ve devoted this post to her pet portraits. Continue Reading →

duplex desires

I’ve mentioned a few times now that Michael and I moved into a new abode over the holidays, and what’s more, promised to share apartment pics of our cute new duplex. While I hate to disappoint – this isn’t said post. Bummer, I know.

As a perfectionist {‘tis the curse of the designer} I just can’t bring myself to show-off our place until we have it all jazzed-up, which frankly, is taking quite a while. So, in the meantime, here are a few items currently topping my ever-growing apartment wishlist. My current focus? The living room and kitchen. Hopefully when I finally get my act together, a *few* of these might even make their way into our new home. Here’s hoping anyway… Continue Reading →

three ways to feast

1. a forest-inspired fete
Feathered Wreath / Wooden & Bone Salad Servers / Shed Reindeer Antler Bottle Opener / Acorn Salt & Pepper Shakers / Wood Cutting Board / Leaf Trivets / Forest Fir Scented Candle

Holiday get-togethers are right around the corner, and because this year I’m determined to roast a turkey and prepare a Thanksgiving feast in the apartment, I’ve decided it’s time to invest in some pieces that will take the edge off of entertaining in such a small space. Here’s a few looks that have made my wish list, and might just inspire you to take a turn at hosting this holiday. Continue Reading →

diy: how a chair can make you look like an ass

There’s still time to enter your before and after pics to Dwell with Dignity’s Ready Aim ReDesign Contest! Since Rachel and I are both on the board, we’re ineligible to enter {bummer} so I thought it would be fun to share one of my own redesign projects – and a few lessons I learned along the way.

About a year ago, I was window-shopping at Lula B’s Antique Mall {one of my favorite places in Dallas for unique finds} when I came across a pair of very cool Mid-Century Modern chairs that were just begging for me to take them home. However, the “very cool” chairs in question were covered in an extremely unfortunate fabric, and under closer inspection, were also pretty beat-up. But since I’d been looking for just such a DIY project where I could demonstrate, what would surely be, my latent talent for refurbishing furniture, I decided something as minimal as a little bad fabric shouldn’t stop me from owning such fabulous chairs. Besides, how hard could it be? Continue Reading →

feather your nest ~ the birds

Something spooky is in the air, and I’m not talking about Halloween. No, based on the amount of crap currently coating my car, it would seem that the birds have taken to the skies once again in their annual trek south for the winter. Don’t get me wrong, I love birds, but admittedly I can’t help but feel freaked out by the sight of them en masse. Chalk it up to the Hitchcock classic, and a grandmother who insisted that if you fed seagulls at the beach, they would peck your eyes out.

That being said, I love bird accents for the home {as I run zero risk of getting my eyes pecked out by a pillow}. So in the spirit of the season, I’ve rounded up enough bird-inspired, home decor elements to make Hitchcock proud. Continue Reading →

summer all year long

With vacations on my mind this week {and a work week reality} I thought it would be fun to feature a few décor elements that will bring summer into your home all year long.

For me, thoughts of summer conjure up images of crashing waves, sandy beaches and of course – plenty of sunscreen. So longing to feel a cool sea breeze on my face {as opposed to this Texas humidity}, here are my picks to give any home an easy-breezy beach vibe. Continue Reading →
