modern thanksgiving / dwell studio

Whether for work or just for fun, I love any excuse to create a mood board. There’s something so gratifying about finding images and elements that perfectly complement one another to tell a story. So when I saw that Dwell Studio was hosting their 4th Annual Modern Thanksgiving Contest via my beloved Pinterest, I immediately got to work designing my ideal Thanksgiving scenario.

In reality, this Thanksgiving will be a pretty quite affair at my parent’s house {especially since my sister won’t be able to join us due to her move to Albuquerque, NM the following week}. So as I started creating my Modern Thanksgiving board, I imagined our family road-tripping to meet somewhere between here {Austin} and there. Which resulted in an exciting discovery – Marfa, TX is almost exactly the same driving distance between the two! I’ve been dying to go to Marfa since Madison first posted about it {and then again} and couldn’t picture a more fun way to spend Thanksgiving than relaxing, drinking, and playing cards with my family… in a teepee!

Inspired by / 01. black & white / 02. retro charm / 03. coral colors & geometric shapes / 04. fall foliage & feminine details / 05. rustic tables & dining al fresco / 06. metallic accents & natural elements / 07. & 08. eclectic simplicity.

More images after the jump!

I imagine that late in the afternoon we would set a rustic-but-modern picnic table for dinner just outside our teepee. Southwest-inspired textiles {including blankets to wrap up in as the sun goes down} and a mix of white votives and vases filled with fresh flowers will add warmth to the tabletop, while hand-painted antlers, a bold black and white serving tray, and arrow napkin ring holders will keep the tablescape from looking too feminine. Letterpressed “Giving Thanks” cards set at each place setting will provide the perfect opportunity for us to reflect as we sit down to eat.

Decor details / 01. table runner / 02. DIY gold arrow napkin rings / 03. a mix of flowers & succulents / 04. votives / 05. a variety of white vases / 06. “Giving Thanks” cards / 07. throw blanket / 08. striped rug / 09. painted antlers / 10. serving tray

Simple dishes with gold accents feel holiday appropriate, and when paired with quirky accents like hand-cut Topo Chico glasses, arrow salad servers, and stainless-steel Forged Flatware feel modern instead of fussy. The perfect compliment to less-typical Thanksgiving fare like Autumn Apple-Cider & Champagne Sangria or Stuffed Acorn Squash with Quiona and Herbs.

On the table / 01. Autumn Apple-Cider & Champagne Sangria / 02. decanter / 03. glasses / 04. Stuffed Acorn Squash with Quiona and Herbs / 05. salad servers / 06. Creamy Pumpkin Pie Bars / 07. dessert plates / 08. serving bowls / 09. Forged Flatware / 10. metallic rimmed dinnerware / 11. Pear & Pomegranate Salad.

Who knows, maybe next year will actually be a Marfa-bound Thanksgiving?! In the meantime I’m crossing my fingers that the judges will like my board as much as I do. Here’s hoping!

Want to enter the 4th Annual Modern Thanksgiving Contest, too? You can still enter until the end of the day!
